The effect of capillary forces on immiscible two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media

A selection of these reports is available in PostScript form at the Faculty's anonymous ftp-Abstract We consider the one-dimensional two-phase ow including capillary eeects through a heterogeneous porous medium. The heterogeneity is due to the spatial variation of the absolute permeability and the poros-ity. Both these quantities are assumed to be piecewise constant. At interfaces where the rock properties are discontinuous, we derive, by a regularisation technique, conditions to match the values of the saturation on both sides. There are two conditions: a ux condition and an extended pressure condition. Applying these conditions we show that trapping of the wetting phase may occur near heterogeneities. To illustrate the behaviour of the saturation we consider a time-dependent diiusion problem without convection, a stationary convection-diiusion problem, and the full time-dependent convection-diiusion problem (numerically). In particular the last two problems explicitly show the trapping behaviour.

A Multi-scale Approach to Model Two-phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media
The immiscible displacement of a wetting fluid by a non-wetting one in heterogeneous porous media is modeled by using a multi-scale network-type analysis: (1) The pressure-controlled immiscible displacement of water by oil in pore-and-throat networks (length scale~1mm) is controlled by capillary forces. (2) The pressure-controlled immiscible displacement in uncorrelated or spatially correlated ...
متن کاملStudy of Two Phase Fluid Flow in Water Wet Reservoir Rocks by Using X-Ray In situ Saturation Monitoring
Displacement of oil and water in porous media of reservoir rocks is described by relative permeability curves, which are important input data for reservoir performance simulation and drive mechanism studies. Many core studies, such as multiphase relative permeability, capillary pressure and saturation exponent determination, depend on the volume fractions of multiphase flui...
متن کاملAn Existence Result for Multidimensional Immiscible Two-Phase Flows with Discontinuous Capillary Pressure Field
We consider the system of equations governing an incompressible immiscible two-phase flow within an heterogeneous porous medium made of two different rock types. Since the capillary pressure function depends on the rock type, the capillary pressure field might be discontinuous at the interface between the rocks. We introduce multivalued phase pressures to give a sense to the transmission condit...
متن کاملDiscontinous Galerkin and Mixed-Hybrid Finite Element Approach to Two-Phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media with Different Capillary Pressures
A modern numerical scheme for simulation of flow of two immiscible and incompressible phases in inhomogeneous porous media is proposed. The method is based on a combination of the mixed-hybrid finite element (MHFE) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. The combined approach allows for accurate approximation of the flux at the boundary between neighboring finite elements, especially in hetero...
متن کاملThe gradient flow structure for incompressible immiscible two-phase flows in porous media
We show that the widely used model governing the motion of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a possibly heterogeneous porous medium has a formal gradient flow structure. More precisely, the fluid composition is governed by the gradient flow of some non-smooth energy. Starting from this energy together with a dissipation potential, we recover the celebrated DarcyMuskat law and the capillar...
